Despotopoulou, Anna. “Fanny’s Gaze and the Construction of Feminine Space in Mansfield Park.” Modern Language Review 99 (2004): 569-583.

This article re-evaluates the protagonist of Austen's Mansfield Park through the lens of gaze theory, asserting that Fanny Price withstands the gaze of the male characters while imposing her own powerful gaze that encompasses views, tastes, morality, and emotions.

Despotopoulou, Anna. “Girls on Film: Postmodern Renderings of Austen and James.” Yearbook of English Studies 36 (2006): 115-130.

The paper examines recent film adaptations of novels by Jane Austen and Henry James, arguing that, through their innovative rendering, the directors bring to the surface transhistorical feminist problematics and reveal an affinity in constructions of femininity between the nineteenth century and our day.

Teresa Gomez and Aranzazu Usandizaga. Introduction by Janet Wolff. Spatial Practices 4. Amsterdam: Rodopi, 2008. 87-106.

This paper re-evaluates the domestic space of the late Victorian drawing room, conceptualizing it as a locus of visibility and ultimately publicity for female characters in novels by George Eliot and Henry James.

Despotopoulou, Anna. “‘What woman was ever safe?’: Dangerous constructions of womanhood in The Ambassadors.” A Companion to Henry James. Ed. Greg Zacharias. Oxford: Blackwell, 2008. 139-155.

This article looks at the conflicting discourses concerning female sexuality in the Victorian period, examining the ways James's novel problematizes and questions essentialist definitions of womanhood.

Markidou, Vassiliki. “Travels off-centre: Lady Hester Stanhope in Greece.” Women Writing Greece: Essays on Hellenism, Orientalism and Travel. Eds. Vassiliki Kolokotroni and Efterpi Mitsi. Amsterdam and New York: Rodopi, 2008. 39-54.

The article examines Lady Hester Stanhope’s travelogue entitled Travels of Lady Hester Stanhope (1846) and analyzes the ways in which the intersection of gender, travel and empire shaped her identity. Stanhope’s journey to Greece informs, and mirrors, her own liminal position between masculinity and femininity, tradition and cosmopolitanism, centrality, and eccentricity, which challenges and reinforces the established image of the British Empire as a male space.

Markidou, Vassiliki. “Between ‘Truth’ and Misrepresentation: Lady Elizabeth Craven in Greece.” Anglo-American Perceptions of Hellenism. Ed. Tatiani G. Rapatzikou. Newcastle: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2007. 15-27.

The article analyzes Lady Elizabeth Craven’s travelogue entitled A Journey through the Crimea to Constantinople (1789) as the author’s attempt to re-write Lady Elizabeth Montagu’s The Turkish Embassy Letters (1767) and project herself as the first female traveler that could inform her readers of the “real” eighteenth-century Greece. It also sheds light on the writing tropes employed by both writers and analyzes the complex intersection of gendered and colonialist discourse that is registered in eighteenth-century female travel writing.

Markidou, Vassiliki. “‘Bubble[s]’ and Female Verse: A Reading of Anna Laeticia Barbauld’s ‘Washing Day.’” Critical Survey. 19.2 (2007): 19-33.

The article constitutes a full-scale intertextual analysis of Anna Laeticia Barbauld’s poem, “Washing Day,” in conjunction with William Shakespeare’s comedy, As You Like It, and Alexander Pope’s mock-heroic poem, The Dunciad, which sheds light on Barbauld’s gendered poetics. Furthermore, the article reads for the first time “Washing Day” as a register of the poet’s personal reaction to Richard Samuel’s representation of her and other distinguished contemporary female artists and literary figures as the “Nine Living Muses of Great Britain.” Finally, it demonstrates Barbauld’s liminality between conservatism and feminism as well as between devaluing and glorifying female art.

The article analyzes the function of the maternal element and terror in Mary Hays’ gothic novel, The Victim of Prejudice, in order to contribute to the “unearthing” of gothic novels written by women writers of the 1790s that were till recently heavily neglected by literary critics. It demonstrates that by anatomizing the complex mother-daughter relationship that constitutes the core of her novel and linking it inextricably to the element of terror, Hays passes a radical critique against her contemporary hypocritical and corrupt social forces that victimize the female sex and calls for a deep change in educating the sexes.
